"Boardwalk Empire" recreates Atlantic City as an electrically lit fairy land, a sensual paradise where every pleasure is available - if you got the money. This HBO series follows the exploits of real life crime figure, Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, who manipulates a world of such mind-boggling graft, greed, corruption, casual cruelty and sex that Tony Soprano and his pals appear like lightweights by comparison. The series begins just as the Volstead Act (Prohibition) comes into being and Nucky; Atlantic City's Republican Party boss is addressing the Women's Temperance League. After which, he arranges for a shipment of illegal hooch to be offloaded which will net him a bundle. It's a cliché to say that organized crime began with Prohibition but the amount of money changing hands as everyone wants a piece of the action is staggering. Everyone is on the take, even elected officials.
